Couple quotes
Jun. 20th, 2004 11:17 pmRecently Herb Anderson preached his last sermon at St Mark's. He decided to share some favorite things from previous sermons. A few that I liked:
Humility is more like self-forgetfulness than self-modesty. Such humility aims at partnership rather than domination, at faithfulness rather than success. The way of peace always begins with humility. (April 4, 2004)
One of the questions that ancient scholars pondered was this: if Jesus had not been executed as a common criminal, would he have died a natural death from sickness or old age? Two issues are at stake in the question: one is the full humanity of Jesus, and the other is whether the crucifixion is the inevitable and necessary destiny of Jesus. Ancient wisdom generally concluded that because Jesus was fully human and subject to ordinary human limitations, he would have died of sickness or old age if he had not been crucified. Why Jesus died the way he did is finally more about God than about a sacrifice for our salvation. The death of Jesus reveals the heart of God as the one who suffers with us. (March 3, 2002)
