In December, with 15+ hours of dark, I feel down and tired most of the time. I crave comfort, especially my comfortable cave of sleep.

In June there's 15+ hours of daylight. I feel more awake, more alive ... well, as long as I'm getting enough sleep. As a child it was confusing to be told it was bedtime when it was light outside. How could it be 8:30 or 9pm when it's light outside? Decades have made it a routine part of June, yes, but my body still feels that "bedtime" is 4-5 or so hours after nightfall, and "morning" is an hour before or after sunrise.

When it's not dark until 9:30 - putting bedtime at 1:30am or 2:30am - and sunrise is at 5am...? I also have problems getting to sleep when it's hot, which hasn't been an issue yet this year (typing with crossed toes)...

Lack of sleep makes me cranky, messes up my logic circuits and coordination, and shoves my moods down. I get less productive and frustrated, which also shoves my moods down. Lack of sleep is Bad.

So if I seem a bit more worried about getting enough sleep in summer? Now you know why.

(Yes, moving closer to the equator would ease the seasonal see-saw. Not planning on it at the present time ... but I'm also not planning on moving to Fairbanks!)

  • 19:38 It's sunnier now than it was at noon. Or 2pm. Or 4pm. Right, it's June.
  • 19:47 (For those who live elsewhere, it's almost 8pm.)
