What people want vs What we think we want
Feb. 16th, 2004 05:08 pmThe idea that the folks might have the free will to tune out tasteless TV programming or do without TV altogether -- or that they might eat up the sleaze, with or without young 'uns in the room -- is almost never stated on television, for obvious reasons of fiscal self-interest. You don't insult your customers. - NYT columnist Frank RichOne of the great myths of America is that we are all sexually "correct". Americans are morally upright, straight, honorable, and reverent. We don't like sex beyond our bedroom walls. We don't like porn or bondage. Domination is distasteful. S&M is sick.
Admitting that people might want entertainment like this year's Super Bowl halftime show insults the myth and those who believe it. Denying that people have the ability to draw conclusions from the crotch-grabbing & such that preceded the boob exposure and decide to channel-surf during the halftime show is an insult to people's intelligence. It seems that most of the people publicly doing the talking about this - in the media and government - would rather believe us to all have the "correct" morals than intelligence.
