The Roberson et al vs Wenatchee & Perez is going to be retried. AND, it looks like Wenatchee is going to have to pay up for refusing to release Perez's records before the original trial.
For those who don't know what I'm talking about: In 94-95, Wenatchee arrested at least 60 adults on 29,726 charges of child-sex abuse involving 43 children. Many cases were settled on the strength of confessions taken down by Wenatchee police Detective Bob Perez, who was the foster parent of a key accuser. Many of the accused were poor or developmentally disabled. Those who were defended by private lawyers were acquitted; those defended by the public defenders were not. Many of those who were convicted have since been released. The Seattle P-I did a series on it in '98.
I can understand that the city government of Wenatchee has an obligation to try to minimize costs for its taxpayers. But it also has an obligation to ensure competence in its police & court system, and to NOT put its citizens in jail without cause.
FYI, the icon is selected for this entry. My mood, well, for some reason that's my mood today. So far. We'll see.
