Harvard economist Rolan Fyer, quoted in the NY Times:
"Groups around the world face the same tension," he said. "When there are inequalities in society and you have a group that has been fundamentally disadvantaged, there's a tension between wanting to excel in the outside world and being loyal to your own group. If you're in an all-black school and you get good grades, that's not a signal you're being disloyal. But in an integrated school, it can be a signal that you're being disloyal by joining the other group."Reminds me of high school. Doing well at math meant some of the girls accused me of being a butch dyke ~ aka not "girl" enough.
