Remember when msft sold xenix (its unix clone) to SCO? That was when OS/2 was The Wave Of The Future* and msft figured it didn't need to bother with unix anymore. Well, msft just licensed SCO Unix. "Microsoft is buying the license to make sure its products can exchange data with Unix software without violating patents" a spokeswoman told The Seattle Times.
*OS/2, Windows NT, and Cairo all took turns being The Wave Of The Future, at least in Systems, during the time I was employed to support/test DOS. Basically, being The Wave Of The Future meant you got lots of respect, attention, headcount, and money (mostly from DOS profits) to come up with various demos and occasionally a product. You also got to look down your nose at DOS and the cretins who worked on it, especially at Systems gatherings. Bitter? Moi? I just wish msft had implemented profit-sharing based on product group...I'd pay off my mortgage, then Chris & Sue's, then Heather & Phil's, then do a few other things...
