state budget fun
May. 5th, 2003 05:51 amSpent some time playing with this WA Budget calculator. Most of my cuts were to what I perceive to be 'non-core' parts of the state budget...early release of non-violent drug offenders, eliminate the film board, things like that. Couple things that frustrated me: no option to ax the state liquor stores (last I read, we lose money on those) and no option to privatize the capitol tours. I think citizens should be able to tour the capitol building, but I don't think the state should have to pay for it.
I also took a 'business' approach; no salary increases for employees, raise health plan contributions, raise taxes & eliminate some of the sales-tax exemptions. Oh, and yes, I went for both gambling proposals.
I ended up with a .008B surplus without using any reserves...and warnings that Tim Eyman, Boeing, the WA employee's union & the WEA would all want my hide.
