We now have an internal blogging server at work. I'll probably mostly use it for musings on testing / QA / software dev stuff.

My first post: Read more... )

"I'm just a guy who's partially disabled and who has laws set up out there to protect my rights to live as a human, not as some second-class citizen," he said. "I'm glad the Disability Act was established before Tim Eyman came along or I'd still be fighting high curbs in crosswalks.

"I used to think Tim Eyman was an OK kind of guy, fighting the good fight; now I see his true colors."
-- quoted in the Seattle P-I
That's the high point of the article. The low part is that Eyman has filed
  • A referendum on HB 2661, which added sexual orientation to the groups protected from for employment & housing discrimination, AND
  • Initative 927 to ban any quotas or other preferential treatment based on sexual orientation.
More info: Eyman's referendum isn't on the Washington Secretary of State's Initiatives & Referenda page yet - but there are a lot of initiatives to the people filed by Tim Eyman.

During a gay Christian conference at St Mark's Cathedral in Seattle, the Rev. Dr. Mel White told of Valentine's day, 1995, when and other activists tried to visit the 700 Club's Pat Robertson's office with flowers, candy, and his written complaint of injustice. White was arrested and held in isolation in the Virginia Beach city jail for twenty-one days.

White told us his first phone call was from Coretta Scott King, saying, "Don't let anyone bail you out." He said she told him, "You are doing the right thing. We'll pray for you." White assured her that he had read the Letter from Birmingham Jail. He stayed put.

This is a footnote in the life a great lady. But it's a footnote that has special meaning to me. Good-bye.

[White served 21 days, eventually resulting in a surprise, late night visit. Afterward Robertson said on the 700 Club that "we abhor violence against homosexuals," and White was released. Since then Robertson has continued his anti-homosexual campaign that leads directly and indirectly to the very violence he "abhors." White has continued his activism.]

"Is there any subject before the American public today more overworked than abortion?" - Frazier to Mandy in Venus Envy.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. This is something I tend not to want to talk about but today I seem to have a bug up my butt about it. So here's some things you might (or might not) have known.

First up: CHOCOLATE!
Don't miss NARAL Pro-Choice Washington's 15th Annual Chocolate for Choice, Wednesday, March 8th 2006 from 6:00-8:00pm in the Ellis Pavilion at Safeco Field. Get your ticket now for an evening of unlimited access to tasty chocolates from donors like Café Juanita, The Essential Baking Company, and Earth & Ocean and fun!
Second: Yes, abortion in much of the US as a whole may be on life support. Washington State is a different matter. Here it's legal by law, not Roe v Wade. Better, it's been on the ballot 3 times in the last 35 years, and been upheld each time. I think the state income tax is the only measure with a similar record - it's been voted down 2 or 3 times. Dem Gary Locke didn't support a state income tax because "the people have spoken"; prolife Catholic Republican John Carlson didn't support banning abortion because "the people have spoken".

Does that mean it absolutely could not be banned? No. But a simple overturn of Roe v Wade won't do it. Brief history of WA abortion laws & initiatives ) Yes, the US is bigger than WA, and I don't mean "we've got ours so no worries". But the local issues and strategies will be different than in, oh, the rural South.

Third is a few more interesting links I stumbled across: And yes, Virginia, I was old enough to vote for 120 & against 694.
