During a gay Christian conference at St Mark's Cathedral in Seattle, the Rev. Dr. Mel White told of Valentine's day, 1995, when and other activists tried to visit the 700 Club's Pat Robertson's office with flowers, candy, and his written complaint of injustice. White was arrested and held in isolation in the Virginia Beach city jail for twenty-one days.

White told us his first phone call was from Coretta Scott King, saying, "Don't let anyone bail you out." He said she told him, "You are doing the right thing. We'll pray for you." White assured her that he had read the Letter from Birmingham Jail. He stayed put.

This is a footnote in the life a great lady. But it's a footnote that has special meaning to me. Good-bye.

[White served 21 days, eventually resulting in a surprise, late night visit. Afterward Robertson said on the 700 Club that "we abhor violence against homosexuals," and White was released. Since then Robertson has continued his anti-homosexual campaign that leads directly and indirectly to the very violence he "abhors." White has continued his activism.]
