from the WSJ 'Piety and Politics'
Aug. 15th, 2004 06:13 pmThe article talked about other political actions going on, but these two made me smile.
| Church | Event | Jen's Comments |
|---|---|---|
| Pasadena Mennonite Church Pasadena, Calif. Mennonite | Worship service outside local Halliburton offices. For three Sundays, 50 people prayed, sang hymns such as "Down by the Riverside," and listened to sermons about how it's biblically wrong to profit from war. | I haven't put a lot of thought into the ethics of profiting from a war that's going to happen anyway. Certainly WWII got a lot of people back to work, and I'm not going to say that's a bad thing. But I am glad the Mennonites are willing to act on their beliefs. |
| Temple Israel of Boston Boston Reform Jewish | Lobbying for and performing gay marriages. Rabbis at the synagogue have performed at least 10 gay marriages since May, when same-sex unions were legalized in Massachusetts. | There are lots of churches and synagogues out there that support equal rights. I'm glad that they're also going public about it - and even the WSJ is noticing. |
