Turns out the people replacing the 7 east windows could come today, so I'm bundled up in leggings, cords, long-sleeved t-shirt, sweater, afghan, hat, and scarf with the heat off and windows out today instead of two weeks from now.

If 2 weeks from now it's 75 degrees out I'm going to be pissed.

(Of course, I'm bundled up because I'm sitting and working on the laptop. They're in t-shirts and jeans because they're moving around.)

ETA: Gee, now that I've had a hot lunch I feel less cold. More like it's the 60F it is instead of the OMG FREEZING I was feeling before. Heh.

[livejournal.com profile] vixyish should read today's Two Lumps. Nao.

Regarding the rich/middle/poor continuum, http://www.globalrichlist.com/ puts my personal income in the top 1% of income for the world's population. For contrast, I'm in the bottom 90% of US personal income....

Oh, and did you see the Obama tax-cut site? It shows how your taxes would be cut under Obama's plan vs McCain's if you earn under 250K/yr. If you tell it you earn more than $250K a year, it displays:

Of course, as The Washington Post displays, McCain's plan would offer tax cuts to all earners. Obama's plan also raises taxes on those earning above 600K/yr.

The online registration page at http://conflikt.org/ now allows buying brunch tickets as well con memberships. If you pre-registered at Conflikt 1, brunch tickets weren't available then. Yes, there is a limit to the number of people they can serve, so if you want to do that now is a good time to buy your brunch ticket :)

If you haven't heard, Conflikt 2 features:
    Guest of Honor: Seanan McGuire
    Toastmaster: Frank Hayes
    Interfilk Guest:Lawrence Dean
...plus other performances by various musical talents (I've heard good rumors, but read [livejournal.com profile] conflikt for official info).

You can also check whether you're registered at http://conflikt.org/members.php

New Office

Oct. 13th, 2008 11:38 am
jenk: Faye (Default)
Week of 9/29 - 10/3
Pack up contents of cube and tech library; answer questions for others in software group.

Week of 10/6 - 10/10
Join most of the rest of the office in working remotely while our furniture is moved to the new office in the next building over.

Morning, Monday, 10/13
First day in new office. Brought in new cleaning wipes to scrub down new desk; made sure I had Benadryl to supplement my normal Claritin to deal with new carpet, paint, etc. Have unpacked my stuff, will be bringing in a plant and maybe an old Microsoft poster from home. Wifi's down so I convinced my machine to talk to the net via an old-style cord. Oh, and it's raining.

Afternoon, Monday, 10/13
Work? Or unpack the tech library?

Today I went in to facilitate a new bite guard by getting impressions made of my top and bottom teeth. I am also the lucky sort of person who has "GAG REFLEX" written at the top of my chart. I find it helps if I arrive early, have some tea or decaf,1 and otherwise try to achieve a nice state of "zen relaxation"2 before I have to hold my jaw open and not gag.

I also have a lingering cough and headache from the cold I keep telling myself was a couple of weeks ago (maybe if I repeat "couple of weeks ago" it will finish going away). I thought a big, hacking cough while the big metal tray of impression goo was in my mouth would NOT GO WELL, so I took one of my cough gels and some Advil.

You know how one of dextromethorphan's side effects is drowsiness...? Yeah. I was relaxed. I was real relaxed. I only came close to gagging when the bottom plate hit my tongue, and moving my tongue up & away fixed it. Which was really good when you consider that, sigh, we had to do the bottom plate twice. And which brings us to this poll.

1I started going to this particular upscale dentist office when I was employed by Uncle Bill's House of Software & World Domination3. The waiting room has a fireplace, coffee/tea/juice/Perrier, a fountain, fresh flowers, and a spicy scented candle. They even have a "teddy bear dental chair" (PDF - see sidebar). The office was featured on the Today show as a "dental spa" (WMV).
2No real zen involved. I just like the phrase.

When walking under the "covered walk" up to my front door, my old black umbrella (it's so old it's got a "Microsoft Systems" logo) is too wide to fit between the support posts & the house.

[livejournal.com profile] jw1776 harvested potatoes Sunday - mostly purples, which is odd. He planted mostly whites.

I picked up a few plants for "difficult" spots in the front yard at on Sunday: a lavender for the NW corner of the yard, and a part-shade called "false heather" to go between the hostas on the mostly-shady side of the mound. I also planted the rest of my nasturtium seeds as a "cover crop" in the front potato bed today. It seems odd to be planting in August, but it feels like a good time: temperatures are mild (highs around 70F) and there's precipitation most days....

I'm looking forward to getting back to riding the bus (and walking between buses ;) regularly.

I lean toward the packrat side of the packrat-minimalist continuum myself, and I've helped go through the belongings of a few late packrats. Today JD, a personal finance blogger, writes about cleaning up his mother's house and notes "a bargain is not a bargain if it goes to waste."

Okay, I feel less worried about being behind on vacuuming & such from worldcon. Funny how deleting the Off Your Lazy Butt reminders from when I was gone made me feel like I'm not behind, I just need to get back into the routine and things will get done. As [livejournal.com profile] mama_hogswatch posted today ...
Housework is a never-ending thing. The task is never "done", so getting it perfect isn't going to help much. Getting used to a steady level of more or less neat and clean? That's a huge help.
(Wonder if JD's seen Squalor Survivors?)

The Bellevue Arts & Crafts Fair is my kind of craft fair. The stuff on display is really really cool. Much of the exhibition space is out of the sun (in the bottom level of the parking garage) so sunburn can be avoided. There's Fisher Fair scones and other "fair food".

It's at Bellevue Square, so there's free parking, restaurants if you want something other than "fair food" and real restrooms instead of just porta-potties. You can also just wander into the AC to cool off (this is most handy when it's 90F ... today's only in the 70s, yay.)

Then there's another fair across the street which also has really cool stuff (including fairy wings, in case anyone going to Faerie Worlds needs them...) and a well-organized Starbucks.

There's also the Sixth street fair, but we didn't make it over there today. :)

Did see [livejournal.com profile] k_crow's mom's booth, did not see [livejournal.com profile] k_crow. Saw some other folks we hadn't seen in a while too. :)

Today's haul:
  • New headband
  • Blue blown-glass "fishing float" to set off Grandma's green ones
  • Blue blown-glass wine stopper
  • Corn dogs & Fisher scones
  • New shoes ([livejournal.com profile] jw1776: "Hey, aren't we by the New Balance store? I should buy new shoes.")
The title of the post is in reference to how they have repeatedly changed the name of the event and nobody cares. :)

...[livejournal.com profile] jw1776, who valiantly dressed in sting-discouraging sweats to disintegrate the hornet's nest out of the upper deck with the garden hose.

He discovered the hornets while jumping on the bottom deck in an attempt to get the raccoons into supersoaker range. Dastardly raccoons lured him over to the hornets' nest, resulting in 2 stings. After treating the stings, he found thick sweatpants and hoodie of cat-bathing caliber. After the ritual song1 he went out to do battle.

The raid on the hornets' nest began with him outside, water on full, nozzle at the ready, and me looking out the sliding-glass door at the nest. It took a while and some circling around to get the angle right, but he soon discovered that the hornets couldn't fly at him against the spray, which helped. No more stings were suffered in the destruction of this nest.

The nest is gone now, and a bunch of hornets are buzzing around where it was located. Doing the hornet equivalent of "what the fuck happened here???", I think. They may be trying to rebuild, not sure. In the meantime, I'm going to think about dinner.
