Hi there, winter
Dec. 15th, 2008 03:01 pmIt's under 29F at my house. In daytime. Yes, this is abnormally low here.
The seasonal state highways (Chinook Pass, Cayuse Pass, North Cascades Highway) are "closed until spring", though whether "spring" means March or June is always in question.
Alec's Portland show tonight is canceled due to a) Pub closing early due to snow and b) Bard stuck on the wrong side of the Siskiyous. Info here.
Appropo of nothing, here's a BBC correspondent on the hypochondriac French :)

rainy-day tweets
Aug. 25th, 2008 12:01 am- 18:52 Nothing brings home how shoulder-length hair sheds rain than going out with a braid and feeling rain fall down the back of my shirt. Ew.
- 19:39 August in Seattle: Only 74F, but running ac to reduce humidity.
- 20:11 Made meatloaf for dinner. Yes, in August.

One of the "miracles" of modern times is that we no longer have to have fire to cook. Even if we choose a gas stove, we decide how much fire and when. This is not only safer than cooking in a fireplace, but much cooler than a cast-iron stove. In hot weather I may not always feel like a hot meal, but if I do, simply turning on the stove top to make dinner is not overly hot.
The oven, on the other hand, does tend to warm the kitchen up. So does some stovetop activities, like boiling water. But in summer these can be skipped - which also says something about the variety we have available. Sure, you might miss some dishes that call for the oven, but it's a tradeoff that works most of the time.
Yesterday & today were the first days in quite a while that were in the low 70s. Yesterday I made my ziti-with-rotini (big pots of boiling pasta & simmering sauce, finished in the oven) and a pan of peanut butter cookies from premade dough. Tonight was pizza. Thanks to
jw1776 reminding me that tomorrow will be 80F, I baked another pan of cookies & batch of scones. ;)

Seattle weather tends to be variable...
Jul. 3rd, 2008 10:41 am...this year seems a bit more variable than most. Until today I'd've said the most active storm featuring atmospheric discharge of electricity I'd seen was an afternoon during college. This has been flashing & rumbling all last night and still going. The garden is getting watered, at least...
oh yeah....
Jul. 1st, 2008 10:17 pmLast night I got 8 hours sleep for the first time since Thursday or Friday. W00t.
Things that helped:
Things that helped:
- Adjusting to leaving the windows open and the bedroom fans on. This makes the bedroom cooler, but means getting used to more noise and ...
- Adjusting to the sleep mask. This is to keep the sunlight from the (open for airflow) windows from waking me at 5 or 6AM.
- A lukewarm or cool shower or bath before bed lowers my body temp and helps me over the "too hot to sleep" factor.
- Keeping in mind that yes, upstairs is a little bit warmer than downstairs, so go up a bit earlier and plan to just have some acclimation time.
I think part of why I felt crappy last night was that I didn't eat until 11:30 or noon yesterday. Dinner was 8 hours after that.
I just ate an omelet and am nibbling on scones. I feel better than I did an hour ago.
And since I'm awake and it's not yet hot, I loaded the dishwasher and got it running, moved the kitchen chairs and started the roomba in there, and put my laundry in the dryer. This makes me feel good too.
Later I may take a nap, because I know 5 hours isn't enough sleep for me.

Jun. 20th, 2008 01:50 pmA joyous & merry Midsummer to those who celebrate ... happy longest day/night for the rest :)
If any locals are curious: Seattle is 29 seconds short of a 16-hour day today. My London coworkers have almost 40 minutes more daylight than us.
Oh, and check out http://www.daylightmap.com/ :)

Jun. 19th, 2008 10:17 pm- 19:38 It's sunnier now than it was at noon. Or 2pm. Or 4pm. Right, it's June.
- 19:47 (For those who live elsewhere, it's almost 8pm.)

Still, I do admit it's not often that Washington has snow in the mountain passes during June. (The glaciers on Washington's Cascade peaks stay frozen all summer, but dude, they're glaciers).
I am glad I didn't get hit by the power outages. :)

- 16:25 Last weekend was 80F. This weekend is in the 40s. Hi Spring. #
- 20:01 I have a copy of Vixy & Tony's new CD. Yay. But it would be a little rude to leave the live show to listen to the CD. Oops. #
- 20:04 ...and it's 8pm & Vixy is singing 'The Girl That's Never Been'. :) #
- 20:41 I'm never sure if 'Rich Fantasy Lives' is more sad or sweet. #

Apr. 18th, 2008 10:07 pm- 10:00 @penelopetrunk added me? Hm. I do read her blog, why not her tweets? Much less freaky than @PastorMark.
- 12:51 Reportedly it's been snowing at Snoqualmie Ridge all day...
- 18:46 Yes, we have snow on the ground in Redmond today, too. Jesse is heading to Dustin's to see if anyone wants to have a snowball fight.

local stuff
Apr. 8th, 2008 01:05 pmState Patrol warns Spring Break travelers to prep for winter conditions when heading cross-state.
Bag, Borrow or Steal ("Netflix for handbags") is local, and got a mention in the Sex & The City movie.

Concert rocked. Hands down-worst seats I've ever had (behind the stage, second to the last row) even without the Drunk Young Republicans shouting behind us. But good.
Trapped, No Surrender, Darkness on the Edge of Town ... yay. Really, yay.
Oh yeah, they did Rosalita. It's not as special to me as it is for others, but it does have the line I used to use as a signature: "Closets are for hangers" :)
Permagrin, yeah. Happy, yeah. Dancing with
jw1776,
skydancer,
dianthus for a couple hours, yeah.
Oh, and one Drunk Young Republican was very pissed that Bruce didn't sing Born in the USA. "I can't believe he didn't do USA! I only came to hear that song! How can he not do USA!" I thought about asking why he was so very very sure Bruce would do it when he hasn't done it since September, but decided I didn't want to deal with explaining things like "Bruce's website" to him.
(Could be worse. Once in L.A. a Clueless Drunkard learned over and asked me if I thought Bruce was going to do something more popular, like maybe Born in the USA ... while Bruce was performing his solo blues version of Born in the USA. *facepalm*)
Oh yeah: We left for Key Arena about 6pm. Fairly sunny, plum & cherry trees in bloom, green, springlike. Drive back home about midnight and find snow on the ground, slushy roads, etc. Kinda ... weird.

Solstice countdown
Dec. 11th, 2007 12:27 pmToday those of us in the greater Seattle area (and others at latitude 47) are enjoying our last day of >8.5 hours of daylight for the year.
Tomorrow we slip under 8.5 until January 1st. Granted we don’t get down to 8 hours, we don’t even get down to 8.4, but it’s still ALL DARK ALL THE TIME WAH.
(Yes, come June I will once again be needing my sleep mask to get some sleep.
I would be needing it now if I was in Cape Town. :)
On the more positive side:

On the more positive side:
- http://www.daylightmap.com/ and http://www.timeanddate.com are nifty cool ways to see how the seasons are changing.
- Dykes To Watch Out For does Solstice, which planted the song that's stuck in my head. And inspired this post, if you didn't guess.
- It's not actually raining today. Compared to the icon, the sky is a slightly lighter grey with occasional hints of blue.
one of those days
Dec. 4th, 2007 10:54 am8:40 - Sunshine! hey, it's not raining!
9:40 - Hm, raining again. But not hard.
9:50 - OMG it is POURING. Shower portion of "rain turning to showers"*.
10:00 - Looks like it's quit for a bit. Okay, waiting for the bus ...
10:05 - Starting to sprinkle again. Oh well, time to get on the bus.
10:30 - Get off the bus to ... hey, sunbreak*! Will it last til I get to my desk?
Now - Hm, raining again. But not hard.
*Northwet meteorologist jargon.
